Week 2

Blogs - not really my thing. I've never really wanted to start one and don't know how I feel about being required to as part of this course. I don't really like that I can't just delete it. Apparently I can delete any postings, etc., but from what I've heard so far deleting myself completely from the whole thing can be an issue. And while posting things on the internet (a very public space) seems to be the new DIY publishing method of choice, it just doesn't appeal. Frankly I don't even like reading blogs. It's not that I don't like to try new things or fear change or am a technophobe. I just don't want everyone else to have access to my thoughts. That's why I don't have a blog already.
So maybe I have some preconceptions which will either be a) confirmed or b) dashed by the end of this.
So, negativity out of the way ... this could be an interesting exercise - doing things I wouldn't normally do. Last time I wanted to do something I wouldn't normally do I got a tattoo. At least this is (slightly) less permanent.
I guess blogs are popular for a reason. 80 gazillion Gen Y-ers can't be wrong! Haha.
Okay seriously .... I know some people who travel a lot and use blogs as a method of keeping everyone else back home posted on what they've been up to and as a method to keep a record of their experiences without the issues of carrying around a journal, losing it, damaging it, etc.
And a blog can serve as a good discussion forum for a group of people who want to share information (i.e. a blog by someone with celiac disease can be a good resource for someone newly diagnosed who doesn't know what in the world he or she can now eat safely).
Libraries could benefit by being able to have a place for library workers to discuss things, as well as having a place for public users to view any information (i.e. what's going on, library news, announcements, place to leave feedback).
And how fun is it that we get a new word out of the whole thing?! Blog! Just like Google as a verb and PC as a noun. Shakespeare would be so excited. Or he'd be freaking out and hiding under a desk muttering in iambic pentameter. But probably excited. He just seems like that kind of guy.
